SING WITH OPERA QUEENSLAND

Youth Workshops

In 2019 Opera Queensland will offer a variety of youth workshops to develop existing skills for vocal students, choral singers, and experienced soloists alike.

Secondary students can choose from an array of workshop experiences – and during some sessions, may even experience a sneak peek into the Opera Queensland studio during rehearsals for one of our amazing 2019 productions. Youth Solo Vocal and Choral workshops are offered to vocalists in years 7 to 12.

Bookings for the April school holiday offerings are now open and numbers are strictly limited. More workshops will be offered later in 2019 with dates to be announced.

Youth Solo Vocal Workshop (classical)

Tuesday 9 April 2019, 9.30 am – 12.30 pm
Opera Queensland Studio
Suitable for students in years 7 to 12
$120

For students of classical voice, this session will provide the opportunity to work excerpts from one longer piece, or two shorter contrasting pieces of your choice. You will learn or refresh a range of skills with a secondary and tertiary teaching specialist along with Opera Queensland artists. You and the other participants will work on language, stagecraft and musicianship to polish existing repertoire and discover helpful techniques for learning future repertoire. Suitable for secondary students of solo classical voice including those preparing for end-of-year recital programs, competitions, eisteddfods, auditions (including tertiary entrance) and examinations (including AMEB & Trinity College).

Strictly limited numbers.

Youth Solo Vocal Workshop (music theatre and contemporary)

Tuesday 9 April 2019, 1.30 pm – 4.30 pm
Opera Queensland Studio
Suitable for students in years 7 to 12
$120

As one of the ultimate forms of music theatre, opera is not a stagnant art form but encompasses a wide range of vocal and dramatic genres and there are many techniques and tricks that are useful no matter what the repertoire you enjoy performing. From the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein through to Jason Robert Brown, Bernard Fanning and beyond, each piece brings the challenge of making it your own and not a clone. Bring one or two short contrasting pieces to present, and explore a wide variety of skills you can employ to bring these pieces to life with our professional tutors – either for personal development, or as you prepare for auditions or solo performances. Suitable for secondary students of solo music theatre or contemporary voice including those preparing for end-of-year recital programs, competitions, eisteddfods, auditions (including tertiary entrance) and examinations (including AMEB & Trinity College).

Strictly limited numbers.

Youth Choral Workshop

Wednesday 10 April 2019, 9.30 am – 4.30 pm
Opera Queensland Studio
Suitable for students in years 7 to 12
$120

In this session you will work on an ensemble piece from each of several contrasting periods in musical history, including a chorus by Henry Purcell or one of his contemporaries, working through the classical period with Gluck, Haydn, Mozart or Rossini, to finish with one of the twentieth century’s beautiful part-songs. Final repertoire choices will depend on numbers, year level and vocal range of participants. Skills covered will include singing in languages other than English, breath management, ensemble diction and music reading.

For this workshop we will need to know your approximate vocal range (soprano, alto, tenor or bass) and details of your current or previous choral, vocal or musical experience. No referral is required, and you will not need to memorise any music, but a basic familiarity with music reading (or the desire to work on this skill during the session) would be an advantage.
