We recently asked Emma Matthews to share her thoughts on music, motivation and more..

Who are some of your favourite composers? A few of my favourite composers are Handel, Bellini, Donizetti, Mills and Verdi.

Is there a particular song that moves you? I’m always moved by ‘Now Touch the Air Softly’ by Calvin Bowman.

What is your favourite contemporary music style? Impressionism. A couple of my favourite composers whose music I love are Copeland and Barber. I also enjoy singing Richard Mills’ music. I enjoy singing in English and these three know how to emphasize text and character in their compositions.

Do you have a musical hero? Richard Bonynge. He’s taught me the balance between beauty of sound and characterisation. He’s guided my career from the beginning and I’ll always be grateful.

What’s your favourite experience in Brisbane? Singing Gilda in Opera Queensland’s Rigoletto – it was my debut in the role in 2009.

What piqued your interest in Voyage to the Moon? Richard Mills approached me and said he wanted to do a Baroque project that would showcase what I do best. I love the idea of singing repertoire that an audience may not know but would love, as well as the whole telling of the story through different composers joined together.

What do you love about Baroque music? That it’s virtuosic, exciting and beautiful to hear.
